With the sun shining on a gloriously green Park, Cove batted first accumulating steadily, with a composed Finney anchoring the innings with a well made 50. Farnham plugged away on a good wicket with a short boundary to restrict Cove to 184-8 from their 40 overs. There were wickets for Berry, Lloyd, A Goldsworthy and Grimes as well as a smart run out with all 3 Goldsworthys combining to remove a stranded batsman.
After Tea, which included a minute’s silence to mark the funeral of the Duke of Edinburgh, Farnham wasted no time in mounting their reply with an opening stand of 88 from just 11 overs between Hicks and Davies all but ending the game as a contest. Returning to the club after a year away, Davies was the aggressor, bludgeoning a quick fire 58 including multiple 6s before he was cruelly run out at the non-striker’s end off a classy looking Hicks drive. After the loss of Berry, Rooney joined Hicks and the pair milked the Cove attack comfortably. Hicks was eventually removed for 32 allowing Golding to join Rooney at the crease with the pair knocking off the final 40 runs to seal victory with more that 13 overs to spare; Rooney finishing 45 not out.
Captain Grimes will be pleased with the run out, especially given the limited pre season that has been possible to date.
Next week, Farnham have a double header of friendlies against Alton, with the 1s again at the Park whilst the 2s head down the A31 in the away fixture.
