Farnham travelled to Walton-on-Thames at the weekend for a key match in the league, with both sides in close proximity in terms of points. Farnham were delighted to be returning to the pitch after having the last two weeks called off due to the opposition having COVID outbreaks. Farnham find themselves in the unfathomable position of being fifth in the league and within touching distance of the top three despite having 5 of their 11 games called off due to weather and COVID!
Grimes won the toss and inserted Walton in the overcast conditions, Goldsworthy and Lloyd immediately go to work reducing Walton to 34-4 with Lloyd bowling with particular venom and Goldsworthy with his usual control and rhythm. The change bowlers continued the pressure on Walton as the spin off Thorpe and pace of young Griffiths (in his last fixture before his call up to the prestigious ECB Bunbury cricket festival) were a delightful paradox to watch as the spin of Thorpe foxed the Walton batsmen whilst the pace and movement of Griffiths had them struggling to settle. The pair picked up two wickets each as Farnham worked their way through the line up, reducing to Walton to 118-9.
Berry and the re-introduced Lloyd bowled well to contribute with Berry picking up two wickets, the final of which was Strachan's fifth catch behind the stumps, a fine display from the senior wicketkeeper. Despite a last wicket tail-wag from Walton, Farnham eventually dismissed them for 154.
In reply, Farnham lost Hick's early with the score on 21 but from there Farnham were in no difficulty, Thorpe was joined by Davies and the pair batted with authority as Thorpe moved the ball around whilst Davies balanced aggression with discipline as he drove and pulled the ball to all parts, the pair took the score to 96 before Thorpe was caught in the slips. Davies continued with his ferocity as he surpassed 50 in 54 balls and he and Berry batted imperiously to take the score past the required total in good time, with some superb fours and sixes around the ground, with Davies ending up on a superb 81 not out off 95 balls and Berry on 26. A fine win for the Castlemen.
