Farnham U11s Begin Season in Style With Thrilling Victory

Stephen Elliott-Nicholls

League Match 1, Farnham vs Blackheath

Farnham’s under-11s opened their league campaign with a statement win on Sunday, overhauling a formidable Blackheath total in a contest that had it all — grit, partnerships, and a tense chase.

The two sides know each other well. Last season brought a crushing Farnham victory on the road, promptly avenged by Blackheath at home. What nobody could have predicted after recent sunshine was quite how testing the conditions would prove — cold, blustery and unforgiving, making every aspect of the game harder than it ought to have been.

Captain Otto won the toss and chose to bowl, and the decision looked inspired early on. Felix struck twice in a penetrating opening spell with Otto himself adding a third wicket to leave Blackheath wobbling. The home side showed admirable resilience, however, rebuilding through solid defence and sharp running, with the conditions — which sent Farnham’s extras tally well above its usual level — playing into their hands.

Further wickets from Artie, Jack and Ben, bravery in the field from Edmund and Kian in particular, combined with two retirements as batters reached 30, all kept Farnham firmly in the contest, and Blackheath were eventually bowled out with a single ball remaining for a total of 138.

Farnham’s reply began with purpose. Artie set the tone immediately, driving powerfully down the ground before an unlucky dismissal brought Felix to join Jack. The pair combined sensibly, keeping the required rate under control as Jack proved a calm anchor. Felix retired on 30 before Ara arrived to inject fresh momentum, punishing the leg side with a flurry of boundaries before reaching 30 of his own. It was Jack, though, who had the final word — having batted throughout, he struck the winning runs with ten balls to spare, carrying his bat in an innings of quality and increasing fluency.

With their highest-ever chase, this was a convincing win and precisely the kind of performance to build confidence for the season ahead. Bowling lines will need tightening to curb the extras, and the batting order will continue to be rotated — but on a raw spring afternoon, this was a genuine team effort with contributions across the board and a great team culture developing.

Thanks to Becky for the refreshments, to Andrew and Jimmy for umpiring, and to all the supporters who braved the cold. On to the next one.
