Guildford U10s Titans vs FCC U10s Black Caps

From the pen of Ben Storey…

Cricket returned with quiet satisfaction and youthful promise on a glorious spring evening, as Farnham U10s Black Caps opened their season against Guildford at a ground bathed in sunshine and framed by early summer’s calm. There was a sense of occasion, not overstated, but felt in the measured way this young side went about their business.

Charlie, standing in as captain with calm authority, won the toss and opted to bowl—an early signal of intent. The decision was vindicated almost immediately. Felix and Seb, bowling with rhythm and purpose, struck early to remove the top three in short order. The fourth wicket followed courtesy of an alert piece of fielding from Seb—his anticipation and precision resulting in a sharp run-out.

Guildford, to their credit, showed resilience. One batter, in particular, stood tall amidst the fall of wickets, compiling a composed 34—an innings of substance that gave their total a sense of respectability. But Farnham never loosened their grip. Jack and Otto each claimed a brace of wickets, their changes of pace and line unsettling the middle order. Behind the stumps, both Otto and Charlie impressed—neat, unflustered, and effective. The fielding, characterised by constant encouragement and a maturity in decision-making, kept extras to a minimum—always the mark of a side taking its cricket seriously. Guildford closed on 83.

Chases in junior cricket are often more psychological than statistical, but Farnham began with the composure of a side that believed in its method. Jack and Otto combined in a partnership of quality, both watchful and positive. Jack fell with the score on 57, a vital anchor laid. There was a moment of wobble, a quick fall of wickets that tested resolve. But cricket, even at this level, rewards clarity under pressure. Seb and George, with quiet assurance, took Farnham over the line.

What lingered as the sun dipped was not just the result, but the manner of it. Teamwork, selflessness, calmness in key moments—these are habits not easily taught, but clearly forming in this group. The bowling unit was particularly outstanding, but this was a win earned collectively.

A word of thanks to the parents whose presence and encouragement lend these moments a sense of community.

A fine beginning. The season stretches ahead.
